This week has seen some Twitter action from Steve Jobs (Apple CEO), Andy Rubin (Google VP of Engineering) and Iain Dodsworth (TweetDeck CEO) over possible fragmentation issues in Android OS.
Steve started this by claiming Google was being “disingenuous” about Android being an open platform advantage, where he also stated that Windows was more open because they remain consistent with its software while supporting various forms of hardware Windows may be installed on. He went on to say that Android doesn't offer that due to the many different kinds of interfaces and hardware devices.
He stated that the Twitter app TweetDeck was a good example of fragmentation within Android because of the difficult time the developershad making it work with the many devices running Android.
In answer back, Google VP of Engineering Andy Rubin simply tweeted a portion of Android's code…for “open”.
“the definition of open: “mkdir android ; cd android ; repo init -u git://android.git.kernel.org/platform/manifest.git ; repo sync ; make.”
Iain Dodsworth (TweetDeck CEO) also responded by defending Android OS by saying, “Did we at any point say it was a nightmare developing on Android?…Errr nope, no we didn't. It wasn't.” He further stated that only 2 developers worked on Twitter app for Android and didn't have any large fragmentation issues at all.
C'mon man! Pick your battle Steve, is it with Google or Microsoft….or Adobe….or HTC?

remember those kids on the playground who said everything that they weren’t into was dumb? that’s pretty much a good summary of steve jobs. he’s created an empire of elitism that seems cool for a minute. then you buy something that isn’t apple and realize that the apple experience is only cool if you buy into their whole philosophy of ‘we’re all that matters’ because, well their products pretty much don’t work with anything other than their own products. they totally control their user experience, while companies like google and microsoft release products that have full intentions of customization and user choice. steve jobs would do best to never even say the word open again. they’ve taken a nix kernel and disgraced it with limitations. shame on you apple.
Steve Jobs doesn’t need anyone’s help to look a fool just give him a mic and say a keyword to him. There are many of these to chose from: Google, Flash, HTC, Android, open, closed, Gingerbread. The last one he is really worried about because it could be the start of the end for his beloved cashcow the iPad, because much more capable alternatives to the iPad will be powered by it.
In the UK we have a television series called Grumpy Old * (the * being replaced by men or women). Steve Jobs would love to be on the show, his audition price could be filmed after he had been asked what he thought of Google tv?
