Looking for your next historical binge after finishing Bridgerton? Netflix’s mini-series My Brilliant Career is here, and it's already one of the platform's most-watched titles. Get ready for lavish costumes, forbidden romances, and a dash of sharp wit.

A New Must-Watch for Bridgerton Fans

My Brilliant Career debuted on Netflix and quickly made its way into the most-viewed rankings. Fans of Bridgerton will find much to love: secret love stories, the intricate dance of society’s rules, stunning period dress, and young women presented to society with the explicit goal of marriage.

Adapted from a Classic Bestseller

The series takes its story from the bestselling novel by Miles Franklin, published in 1901. Decades ago, director Gillian Armstrong adapted it for a feature film starring Sam Neill. Now, Netflix has reimagined the tale as a six-episode limited series, introducing the story to a new generation.

A Heroine at Odds with Her Fate

At the center is Sybylla, played by Philippa Northeast, a young woman living quietly in the countryside. Her life shifts dramatically when her grandmother, Winifred Bossier (Anna Chancellor), invites her to stay at the Caddagat estate. The visit, however, comes with a catch: her grandmother is determined to see her married quickly, leaving Sybylla little choice but to go along.

Beneath the surface, Sybylla secretly works on her own novel, hoping it may allow her to achieve independence without needing to marry. Her open-minded views and independent streak shock her grandmother, adding layers of tension and humor.

Drama, Laughter, and a Fiercely Modern Spirit

Sybylla’s journey brings her into contact with men who complicate her convictions, including Harry (Christopher Chung) and the estate’s overseer, Frank (Jake Dunn). Much like Eloise in Bridgerton, Sybylla is unwilling to be shaped into the ideal marriage prospect her family wants. For her, the family’s well-intentioned plans are a bit of a nightmare.

This series weaves together drama, suspense, and moments of levity, making My Brilliant Career a standout recommendation for the end of summer. Whether your interest lies in romantic intrigue, period fashion, or stories of women forging their own paths, Netflix’s latest historical drama could easily become your new favorite.
