According to AndroLib's reporting, the Android app market has just crossed the 90,000 mark, and at the current rate of growth is expected to cross the 6-figure mark by the end of the month.
According to this chart, over 8,000 apps have been added in the month of July so far, and as of this writing, it's currently the 11th, which is pretty amazing, and does support the claim that the market is likely to hit 100,000 by the end of the month.
Sure, not all of the apps are amazing, but a bigger pool to draw from means that we are likely to have more good apps, and the greater the likelihood that you can find the app you need. And to make it better, somewhere between half and two-thirds of those apps are free. This time last year, there were about 1,000 apps, and in the last few weeks, multiple new devices were announced, so we can expect those numbers to continue to climb as more and more phones hit the market.
Google has stated that their intent is not to kill the iPhone, but I would certainly be thrilled to see the Android app market surpass the Apple App Store in terms of number of apps in the upcoming months.

Kill the iPhone Google, kill it!
I would say that about 10-15 thousand of those are themes, ringtones, etc. Which aren’t really apps. So the numbers are kind of skewed. But still, it’s nice to see the growth increase.
