Although wireless carriers have been pushing unlimited data plans and many users may not have to worry about their data usage, Google is still trying to help those users who do want to stay on top of their wireless data usage. Last year they released a new app called Datally that monitors app data usage and gives users tools to manage that usage. Earlier this summer Google added to the available tools with an update. Yesterday Google added in two new features to Datally to help “tame your data.”
The first is a feature called “Emergency Bank” which functions to create an emergency reserve of data. Users can specify how much data should be kept in reserve for emergencies. Datally will stop apps from using data once a user hits the point where they would be dipping into the emergency bank. Users can then use their data that is part of the emergency bank as appropriate – like summoning a ride or getting out an urgent message.
The second new feature is Bedtime mode and is intended to help users control data usage while they sleep. Google says Datally can be configured with the new Bedtime mode to automatically shut off data usage at night while a user is asleep. That way you don't wake up to discover apps have been busy all night long using up data in the process.
