Earlier this year, Oracle's lawsuit against Google finally came to an end. The jury found that Google wasn't guilty of infringing on Oracle's copyright and that their use of Java in Android was protected by fair use provisions.
However, after the judgement came in, Java said they planned to appeal to that decision. Fast forward a few months and we finally have an official motion from Oracle to appeal the loss. Get ready for more court disputes!
In case your memory is foggy on the entire case, Oracle purchased Java, then sued Google because Google used some Java APIs in their Android operating system. Oracle lost the first case, then the second case had a jury find that Google's use of Java APIs were protected under fair use, making this the third time that Oracle is going to try to win a case against Google over this issue.
It's going to be tough for Oracle to overturn a case where a reasonable ruling already happened, but when there's this much money at stake you can definitely understand why they're so interested, even if it is a little sleazy.
Like all lawsuits (and boy have we covered a ton of those over the years) it'll take a few months before anyone hears anything official on this case, and it'll be even longer before a decision is made. We'll keep you updated.
