For better or for worse, Google struck a deal with Verizon for the carrier to be the “exclusive” carrier for new Pixel phones. As many have noted, besides the confusion the Verizon marketing is creating, the potential for delayed system updates is a concern for some potential buyers. After an initial statement from Verizon indicating they were going to handle system updates for Pixels sold through the carrier, Verizon has clarified that this will not cause any delays for system updates on their carrier sold devices.
According to a statement from Verizon:
“First and foremost, all operating system and security updates to the Pixel devices will happen in partnership with Google. In other words, when Google releases an update, Verizon phones will receive the same update at the same time (much like iOS updates). Verizon will not stand in the way of any major updates and users will get all updates at the same time as Google.”
In addition to the information about the Verizon sold Pixels getting updates on the same schedule as Google devices, the carrier also discussed the ability to take Verizon sold devices to other carriers and “bloatware” that may be installed.
“Also, the Verizon version of the Google Pixel is carrier unlocked, so you can use it where ever you like. Finally, we have three apps pre-installed on the phone G90, My Verizon (which is your account management tool) and Verizon Messages (your messaging app). As you noted, all three can easily be uninstalled by the user.”
Even better than just having Verizon’s word on the matter, Google also confirmed “OS updates and monthly security patches will be updated on all Pixel devices (Verizon and non-Verizon versions) simultaneously.”
All of this should give Pixel buyers who opt to go through Verizon a better level of comfort that their ownership experience will be similar to those buying through Google.
