9 months ago, Google shocked the world by announcing they had sold Motorola to Lenovo for just under $3 billion. As per all deals like this, it takes time to pass through all the regulatory approvals, and today the deal is final. We can now officially refer to Motorola as a Lenovo company.
The plan is still to keep Motorola as a wholly-owned subsidiary, and their headquarters will remain in Chicago. Whether all 2,800 employees out of that headquarters are safe remains to be seen though. And if you remember, Google retained Motorola's deep collection of patents.
“Today we achieved a historic milestone for Lenovo and for Motorola – and together we are ready to compete, grow and win in the global smartphone market. By building a strong number three and a credible challenger to the top two in smartphones, we will give the market something it has needed: choice, competition and a new spark of innovation,” said Yang Yuanqing, chairman and CEO, Lenovo.
“Motorola is in great hands with Lenovo, a company that’s all-in on making great devices,” said Larry Page, CEO, Google.
Did Motorola finally find a home with Lenovo or is Motorola destined to be sold yet again? Let us know in the comments.

Motorola used to have a reputation for good radios but bad boot-loaders. For several upgrades I stuck with Motorola due to excellent call quality. Then they locked their boot-loaders, then made them easy to unloack… I’ll wait to see how things go for for a while under Lenovo before I get another Moto.
