Fitbit, has just rolled out a major update to its mobile app that completely overhauls the original UI, and thus its general sleep-tracking experience. The redesign now aims to provide users with simpler navigation, yet offering more insightful data about their sleep patterns over time.

Uncluttered Sleep Timeline

The redesigned sleep page offers a streamlined layout that displays all the essential information on a single screen. Users can now view their sleep duration, sleep score, and sleep timeline for the previous night without having to navigate through multiple pages. More or less easier for users to quickly assess their sleep at a glance, in theory, we suppose. But we're not sure how optimized this really is in practice compared to the original.

Then by pressing and holding on to the timeline, users can even pinpoint the exact times they fell asleep, woke up, and transitioned between light, deep, and REM sleep stages throughout the night. All the while viewing a cleaner UI than before. This level of visual detail should give a better picture of their sleep patterns and identify potential areas for improvement.

Extended Sleep Metrics

Another notable feature of the redesign is the ability to view sleep data over extended periods. The app now includes tabs at the top of the screen that allow users to switch between daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly views of their sleep data. Like timeline toggling, these historical graphs can generally help users identify trends and changes over time. Thus, providing even more context for understanding overall sleep health.

In addition to the visual overhaul, the update also introduces more detailed sleep metrics. The “More about your sleep” section, for example, provides users with data on estimated oxygen variation, sleep heart rate, snoring and noise detection, and restlessness. The “Your monthly sleep profile” feature, shows users a summary of their sleep patterns and habits over the course of a month.

Rollout and Concerns

The redesigned sleep-tracking experience is currently being rolled out to Fitbit users on both Android and iOS. According to the company, the update should be fully available to everyone in the coming days.

Sleep tracking has become the inevitable staple service type for a lot of different health-related apps over the last decade. On paper, the changes do look pretty nifty, especially if you are a relatively new user. The sleeker UI is a nice refresh, and having additional data points about our sleep could be handy for any additional context that you might want to grasp.

But you know what they say, old habits die hard. Statistically speaking, we can expect a considerable ratio of Fitbit's users, who got super accustomed to the previous interface, to struggle in the next day or two with adapting to the new look and layout.
