Electric vehicle charging in China has reached blistering speeds—and much of the world is watching, stunned. In just a few years, charging times that once seemed painfully slow are suddenly measured in the time it takes for a quick bathroom stop on a family road trip. What's fueling this acceleration?

A Race Led by BYD—and Fast Followers

BYD made the first major move, but, as is common in China, the rest of the industry quickly caught up. Shortly after BYD's big reveal, FAW Hongqi announced its own battery, boasting charging from 10% to 70% in under five minutes. That's a bold claim for a luxury-focused brand.

Over the last three years, Chinese automakers have dramatically altered how drivers perceive EV charging. The conversation has shifted away from charging power and toward sheer speed. Every new battery generation or vehicle introduction has set a new benchmark. In April 2026, BYD stunned its rivals with Flash Charge technology, promising recharge speeds rivaling a gasoline fill-up—a clear sign this was no mere marketing spin.

The Battery Technology Surge

China's auto industry tends to move collectively on strategic technology. Soon after BYD's announcement, CATL and Geely followed suit with new battery chemistries—the Shenxing III (third generation) battery from CATL and the Golden Brick from Geely. Both use lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cells, known for stability and long life, despite being heavier and less cold-tolerant than some options.

The next major player was a surprise: FAW, through its premium Hongqi brand, working with Lishen Battery. Their latest tests showed charging from 10% to 70% in just 3 minutes and 41 seconds—more than a minute quicker than BYD's lead. For a near-full charge, from 10% to 97%, FAW reached just 8 minutes and 3 seconds at a peak 12C charging rate (twelve times the battery's capacity).

Managing Heat, Real-World Adoption, and the Ticking Clock

The contest over thermal management is fierce, especially between Geely and BYD over cell temperature during super-fast charging. FAW is highlighting its system, reporting that internal pack temperatures during charging differ by no more than 3°C (about 5.4°F) and never exceed 122°F (50°C). Such control is key to making these rapid charges safe.

Despite the buzz, as of August 2026, FAW Hongqi has not yet confirmed this ultra-fast charging battery in any production vehicle. Geely's Golden Brick battery is so far only in the Lynk & Co 10 sedan. BYD, by contrast, already offers its Flash Charge tech in more than 15 models across a range of prices, including plug-in hybrids, and has rapidly expanded its charging network to make this technology widely available. CATL's Shenxing III remains the numeric speed leader, with a 10% to 80% charge in 3 minutes 44 seconds, or up to 98% in 6 minutes 27 seconds. Even though LFP batteries are a bit heavier and less winter-proof, they're likely to stay relevant for years. (“Mom, I need to pee…” “Okay, but hurry—back in five minutes!”)

Growing Tensions and European Worries

Are you really sure about what you're saying? Really? Your cherished shareholders at Renault and the other European firms? All those French companies sourcing raw materials from China? Slavery? We like to lecture neighbors about housecleaning, but maybe we should handle our own overflowing trash cans first… Instead of striving to make amazing, ultra-reliable cars, we just grumble when someone else innovates and pushes things forward.

China is an existential threat to our economy. In every sector. Now, they're focusing on autos—one of Europe's industrial highlights, employing hundreds of thousands (myself included). The Chinese enjoy considerable technological mastery and have reached this level in part thanks to massive subsidies. For context, the auto industry accounts for a third of Europe’s R&D spending. Buying Chinese because it's cheaper today just means higher unemployment tomorrow.

Many observers admire China's performance, however reluctantly. Others see these rapid gains as a significant threat—to jobs, to local innovation, and to Europe's long-term economic health. One thing is clear: the EV charging speed race has entered a new era, and the clock is only moving faster.
