Rear cameras take better photos than selfie cameras almost every time, but framing a shot you cannot see has always been the tradeoff. Oppo's answer is a small magnetic accessory that solves exactly that problem, and it launched alongside the Reno16 series rather than getting buried as an afterthought.

What's new

The Oppo Bubble is a magnetic companion device built around a small AMOLED touchscreen. A magnetic ring included in the box attaches to the back of a compatible phone or case, and the Bubble itself snaps onto that ring. Clipped in place, it mirrors the phone's rear camera feed in real time, so framing, lighting, and expression are visible before the shutter fires instead of after.

It also works untethered. As a remote viewfinder and shutter trigger, Oppo rates the Bubble's range at up to 10 meters, and the camera interface supports four zoom levels (0.6x, 1x, 2x, and 3.5x) switchable directly on its screen, depending on what the paired phone's lenses support.

Why it matters

Oppo is not treating the Bubble purely as a photography tool. When it is not acting as a viewfinder, the same device functions as what Oppo calls a Custom Vibe E-Badge, meant to be clipped to a bag, belt, or jacket. A companion app lets users cycle the screen through static images, motion photos, and short video clips in a carousel of up to 20 items.

That dual purpose is the more interesting bet than the camera trick itself. Rear-camera selfie problems have usually been solved with software, screen flips, or a second display baked permanently into the phone. Oppo has instead made the viewfinder a separate, detachable, wearable object, which is a stranger and more interesting answer than most phone makers have tried.

Key details

Oppo
  • AMOLED touchscreen, 7mm thick, 27.5g according to Oppo's product page (Oppo's press release separately lists 35g, so treat exact weight as unconfirmed until Oppo clarifies)
  • Live rear-camera viewfinder with 0.6x, 1x, 2x, and 3.5x zoom
  • Remote shutter and viewfinder control up to 10 meters away
  • Magnetic ring included in the box for attaching to a phone or case
  • 550mAh battery: up to 25.33 hours as a static wallpaper carousel, or up to 9.66 hours when actively used as a camera viewfinder with a shutter press every 10 seconds, both at medium brightness per Oppo's own lab testing
  • Auto-pairs with nearby ColorOS devices within 20cm
  • Currently supports the Reno16 series and Find X9 series, with more devices possible through future OTA updates
  • Pricing and regional availability have not been confirmed

Takeaway

The Bubble is a genuinely different fix for a real photography annoyance, built as something you wear rather than a feature buried three menus deep in the camera app. Whether it catches on depends on price, which Oppo has not announced, and on how many phones actually end up supported beyond the Reno16 and Find X9 lines at launch.
