It's been a whirlwind of leadership exits and structural shake-ups these past few months since Oppo began consolidating its smartphone portfolio. Now, Realme India is feeling it too as Michael Guo, who has led the brand's India operations since March 2023, has stepped down from his role. But it's not for reasons you may be thinking.
Oppo merges Realme and OnePlus
According to Indian financial and business news platform MoneyControl, Realme India has confirmed that Michael Guo has stepped down from his role as the brand's India CEO, citing health reasons.
However, they didn't specify the nature of Guo's condition. Chase Xu, Vice President of Realme Global, is set to oversee the India market going forward.

Before now, Guo was a founding team member under Realme CEO Sky Li, and he spent nearly eight years with the brand in India. He took the India CEO role in March 2023 after Madhav Sheth left. He had also been informally overseeing OnePlus India's operations in the months before his exit.
We confirm that Michael Guo has stepped down from his role as the Representative Head overseeing business of India at realme brand due to certain health reasons. The company respects his decision and extends its sincere appreciation for his valuable contributions to the business including the India territory during his tenure.

Under the proposed structure, the goal is to eliminate duplicate roles, streamline product development, consolidate marketing, and strengthen the group's position against Samsung, Xiaomi, Vivo, and Apple.
Therefore, Realme would gradually move from being an independent sub-brand to a product series within Oppo's broader ecosystem, similar to how the Reno lineup is within Oppo's portfolio.

Existing distributors get the option to join Oppo's network and handle both brands. Around 25 employees have already resigned from Realme India last month across sales, marketing, service, and administrative functions.
A phased rationalisation process targeting duplicate roles is expected to continue over the next 12 to 15 months. Overall, the transition will accelerate after the Diwali festive season, which falls on November 8 this year.
OnePlus was a key game player
OnePlus is expected to narrow its focus to online sales with fewer launches, especially in mid-range and premium mid-range segments. If you were waiting for a follow-up to see of their major lineups, it may never come or it'll come much later than normal.
More importantly, if you prefer to hold and inspect your phones before buying in a carrier store or third-party retailer, the option has disappeared.

It's all still surprising, given that OnePlus was among the opening acts for a wave of foreign competition that could’ve de-Americanized the premium smartphone market. It proved that you did not need an American or European brand name to compete at the top, after successfully walking into a space dominated by Samsung, Apple, and Google.
It also inadvertently applied the kind of competitive pressure the European Union has been legislating for years through the Digital Markets Act and broader antitrust action. They forced dominant players to justify their pricing and ecosystems.
