Roole Map: A French GPS With Privacy at Its Core
Roole Map, launched in 2022 by the French automotive club Roole (formerly Identicar), set out with a single goal: create navigation specifically for driving in France, without risking your privacy or blowing your vacation budget. The app positions itself as a homegrown answer to American heavyweights like Google Maps and Waze, tailored for leisure travel.
Roole Map is geared toward drivers in France. It holds the “Origine France Garantie” label and, according to Auto Plus, has reached more than 500,000 downloads on Android as of 2026. The developers describe it as “free, with no advertising, designed for drivers in France,” financed not by selling user data but as a showcase for their automotive expertise.
A Different Approach to User Data
Whereas Waze and Google Maps depend on targeted advertising and collect large amounts of user data, Roole Map claims a more minimal approach. There’s no required account, no sharing of private data with third parties, and the app can even run without a mobile data connection. This counters the common tech saying: “If it’s free, you’re the product.” Roole Map insists this isn’t the case here.
Features Designed for Travelers
Like any GPS, Roole Map provides route planning, real-time route recalculation, and traffic updates. What sets it apart for vacationers are additions such as fuel price data, toll estimates, expected parking costs at your destination, and electric vehicle charging considerations.
The app shows parking lots open 24/7, rest stops, and where disruptions—like severe weather or roadwork—might slow you down, using official French data. Electric vehicle drivers benefit from partnerships with services like Girève and Chargeprice, which help locate available charging stations and show current rates.
Community-based reporting was added by spring 2026, enabling users to flag accidents, police checks, hazards, or construction—similar to Waze—to improve real-time alerts. Roole promotes “guaranteed savings,” giving an upfront estimate not only of trip duration but also probable costs for fuel, tolls, and parking before you set out.
Should You Try Roole Map?
Roole Map is free to download for Android and iOS, and it works with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay so you can mirror it on your vehicle’s screen. The app is mainly built for travel in France and currently allows just one stopover per route, so it’s not yet a full replacement for multi-stop trip planners or the various transportation options offered by Google Maps.
If you regularly drive in France, watch your budget, and want to skip the ads, Roole Map could be your new go-to GPS for vacation getaways. Those venturing abroad, relying on public transport, or depending on the huge worldwide Waze community might want to keep their usual apps around—at least until we see how far this French alternative can go.
