You have always had some level of privacy on WhatsApp. If you don't want people to have a permanent record of what you said, you can turn on disappearing messages. However, it's limited to fixed timers of 24 hours, 7 days, or 90 days from when the message was sent, regardless of whether the recipient ever opened it. Meta is adding a faster option to the list.
After Reading feature wipes messages instantly
According to WABetaInfo, Meta is testing a new timer option for disappearing messages called “After Reading”. It's currently rolling out to some beta testers on WhatsApp for iOS 26.19.10.72 through TestFlight. It was first spotted on Android and is now making its way to iPhone users.
After Reading starts a countdown upon sending. You can set the post-read window to 5 minutes, 1 hour, or 12 hours, depending on how quickly you want it gone after someone sees it.

The clock only begins once the recipient reads the message. So if you send something and your contact doesn't open WhatsApp for 2 days, the message will remain pending.
However, your copy of the message disappears 5 minutes after you send it, even though your contact hasn't seen it yet, and their copy is still there. If they don't open it at all, it will permanently disappear after 24 hours.
The feature is optional and off by default, so existing conversations aren't affected unless you manually enable it. It also applies per chat rather than globally, so you can turn it on for specific conversations without it affecting everything else.

WhatsApp is also working on redesigned chat bubbles. The new ones will look softer and have a larger corner radius to appear rounder. They’re also removing the traditional bubble borders for shared media.
At the same time, automatic greeting messages for group chats, channel replies, channel media cleanup tools, quicker emoji reactions for status updates, and a privacy-focused “Incognito Chat” system for Meta AI are coming. We'll see more of them soon.
Join the WhatsApp iOS Beta Program to use After Reading
To get early access to After Reading on iPhone, join the WhatsApp beta program through TestFlight. TestFlight is Apple's official beta testing app. Developers use it to release early, unfinished versions of their apps to a select group of users before the public release.
Download the TestFlight app from the App Store, then join a beta program through an invite link. It comes either directly from the developer or via a public beta link if the developer makes one available.

Once you're in, TestFlight installs the app's beta version on your phone and updates it separately from the regular App Store version. Be mindful that such apps are buggy or unstable since they're still being tested, and not every feature in a build is guaranteed to make it to the final release.
On Android, open the WhatsApp page in the Play Store and scroll down until you see the “Join the beta” section. Tap Join, and wait a few minutes for Google to enroll your account. Then update WhatsApp once the beta version becomes available.
