If you recently tried to back up all your Google Photos to your computer, you might have hit an unpleasant snag. Users using the Google One Storage Manager on their PC to download their photo and video collections found that some ZIP files wouldn't open, regardless of what they tried.

What caused the ZIP file problem?

According to Google, the issue was related to how data was written for certain archives. Specifically, archives exceeding 4 GB were generated incorrectly by the storage management tool. So, after hours waiting for your large photo library to download, you could be left with a file that simply wouldn't extract.

Google's support team stated: “Our engineering teams have identified the cause and have fixed this bug.”

Any new downloads started from a computer using the Google One Storage Manager should now work as intended, regardless of how large the compressed folder is. In short, moving forward, users should not face this particular issue anymore.

If you already have a corrupted ZIP file, here's what you can do

If you've already downloaded a large archive and can't or don't want to re-download everything—perhaps to avoid heavy internet use—Google has provided a dedicated repair tool. This utility can attempt to fix corrupted ZIP archives that are already on your hard drive, potentially saving you from having to repeat the time-consuming download process.

Time limit: repair tool available only until June 1, 2027

There is an important deadline to note. Google's repair tool will only be available until June 1, 2027. For users who deleted their originals from the cloud to free up space right after downloading a defective archive, this tool may be their only opportunity to recover those photos and videos. Don't wait until it's too late.
