Patience, Severance fans! While we’re all eagerly awaiting the return of one of Apple TV’s most celebrated sci-fi series, it looks like we’ll need to stay on the edge of our seats just a bit longer. Adam Scott—star and executive producer—recently shared some tantalizing updates at Canneseries, and it’s safe to say more twists and mysteries are ahead—and maybe some frustration for viewers who crave closure.

Season 3: Still a Distant Dream

To refresh your memory: Season 1 of Severance aired in 2022, and Season 2 is set for 2025. At the Canneseries festival this past weekend, Adam Scott confirmed Season 3 was not yet in production.

“It’s going to be incredible. There are so many surprises to come,” he told the audience while accepting the Icon Award. “I can’t wait to shoot it.”

Scott did not reveal much about what’s next, but he did confirm that Ben Stiller would not be back to direct episodes this time. That’s a notable shift for the upcoming season.

How Many Seasons Will There Be?

One big question remains: how many seasons will Severance ultimately have? According to Scott, no one—not even the cast—has a definite answer right now. The show has consistently earned acclaim, including an average 90% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and 10 Emmy Awards. With that track record, it’s hard to imagine Apple TV wrapping things up soon. However, Scott made it clear the creative team already knows how the story will end and he’s relieved to be in the loop:

“Oh yes, I know the ending. I’m an executive producer on the series, so I’m involved in everything. We’re always talking with the writers and Dan [Erickson]. I’m aware of everything. As an actor, I like to have as much information as possible.”

Don’t Expect All the Answers

Still, even with an ending set, fans should temper their expectations about getting complete closure. Scott cautioned that the last episode may not answer every mystery, and he pointed to some of his favorite inspirations for enigmatic storytelling:

“I love Twin Peaks, and I love that people keep rediscovering it. I don’t know if Severance will become part of pop culture and be remembered the same way, but I agree: mystery is extremely powerful. In the show, we always try to preserve a sense of mystery. I loved the ending of The Sopranos. I was frustrated, but it was brilliant, and I still haven’t figured out the mystery. That’s something I appreciate not just in series and films, but in music, too. I’ve always loved bands that don’t reveal everything about their creative process or their members. I like letting my imagination roam and exploring the work.”

The Allure of the Unknown

What’s clear is that the enigma at the core of Severance is central to its appeal. Even if viewers never receive all the answers they hope for, that sense of mystery is exactly what keeps many coming back. With surprises promised and Scott’s clear investment in the story’s twists and turns, this sci-fi saga is still far from over.

Whether you love an unsolved riddle or crave a tidy conclusion, get ready: the world of Severance looks set to keep us all thinking long after the credits roll.
