A Fresh Take on a Classic: Scooby-Doo: Origins
On April 24, Netflix revealed the first official cast photo from its live-action series titled Scooby-Doo: Origins. Filming began in Atlanta, and the eight-episode project is aiming to bring a modernized adaptation to the beloved animated franchise, which originally aired in the United States in 1969 on CBS.
The Gang Comes Together
This new version revisits how the Scooby-Doo gang first met. The series centers on Scooby-Doo and his friends Fred (played by Maxwell Jenkins), Daphne (Mckenna Grace), Velma—listed as Vera in the French source (Abby Ryder Fortson)—and Shaggy, referred to as Samy in the French version (Tanner Hagen), as they tackle a mysterious case during a summer camp. According to the synopsis, Velma is a pragmatic and scientific city girl, while Freddy is described as a strange but charming newcomer. Together, the group finds themselves drawn into a chilling mystery that threatens to reveal their secrets.
“With Velma, the pragmatic and scientific city girl, and Freddy, the strange but charming newcomer, they set out to solve a case that will drag them into a terrifying nightmare, with the potential to bring all their secrets to light,” the synopsis continues.
Production Details and Franchise Legacy
As of this writing, the release date for Scooby-Doo: Origins has not been announced. The project is produced by Warner Bros. Television and written by Josh Appelbaum and Scott Rosenberg, who are basing the show on the original Hanna-Barbera cartoon.
Scooby-Doo, created by Joe Ruby and Ken Spears, premiered in 1969 and followed a group of young detectives, Mystery Inc., led by their accident-prone Great Dane as they tackled supposedly supernatural puzzles.
Scooby-Doo’s Ongoing Appeal
The franchise quickly gained fans around the world; in France, the series began airing in 1975. Over the years, Scooby-Doo has inspired multiple TV and film adaptations. In 2002, a live-action film based on the cartoon was released, and the most recent theatrical release was the animated film Scoob! in July 2020, directed by Tony Cervone. In 2023, an HBO Max spin-off centered on Velma (called Vera in French) also debuted, showing the enduring popularity of these characters.
From summer camps to haunted mansions, every generation seems to have its own Scooby-Doo adventure. Now, Scooby-Doo: Origins is poised to bring the Mystery Inc. crew to a new audience—unmasking secrets, facing nightmares, and ensuring that Scooby Snacks remain as iconic as ever.
