Brace yourselves: WhatsApp is preparing a major change to your chat screen. If you've ever noticed how Instagram, Messenger, or Facebook place Stories at the top, WhatsApp is bringing a similar approach to Status updates—which function much like Stories on other Meta apps.

Status Updates Are Moving Up Top

Most Meta platforms highlight “Stories” prominently, while WhatsApp has always called its version “Status” and tucked it away. Now, according to WABetaInfo—a site specializing in WhatsApp news—the app has been working on giving Status updates a much more visible spot.

Specifically, in one of the latest versions of WhatsApp, WABetaInfo noticed a change in how the swipe-down gesture works within the “Chats” tab. Previously, swiping down only let you filter conversations, such as all chats, favorites, or unread messages.

With the new design, this same gesture could soon serve another purpose. Users might be able to swipe down and have the latest Status updates from their contacts appear right at the top of the chat screen, without scrolling through their entire chat list. WhatsApp would be showcasing Status updates in a style similar to how Stories are displayed on other Meta apps.

Status Updates Baked Into Your Navigation

This update reportedly integrates Status updates into the navigation bar at the top of the Chats tab. The middle of the bar would highlight your most interactive contacts who have recently posted a Status, giving their updates more visibility—again, echoing the familiar Stories carousel from Instagram or Facebook.

With this new layout, your contacts' latest Status updates are placed front and center—no digging required. If this format rolls out broadly, WhatsApp will be visually falling in line with Meta's other messaging platforms across the US and worldwide.

Still In Development

If you're reaching for your phone to test this update, you may need to wait. As of now, the feature is still under development and hasn’t been released to all users on iOS or Android. According to WABetaInfo, it is expected to become available in a future update, but as of April 2026, there’s no confirmed rollout for the public just yet.

  1. This WhatsApp redesign sounds like a smart move, especially with status updates moving to the top like Stories. It makes sense for user flow but might confuse long-time users used to the old layout. The article mentions it’s coming soon, which means now’s the time to start thinking about how this affects daily workflows. I ran into a similar issue and https://nanobanana-pro.me had a really practical walkthrough on adapting to UI changes in other apps.

  2. Ive been using WhatsApp daily and this change makes total sense. Seeing status updates at the top like Stories will be so convenient, especially since I often check Nano Banana Pro for quick tips before messaging friends. It should cut down on scrolling through old chats just to see new updates. Really happy to see WhatsApp improving usability like this.
