Big Sci-Fi Arrivals—and Unmissable Departures
Netflix has recently put a spotlight on science fiction. According to French media, blockbusters like “War Machine” (released March 6) became global phenomena, reportedly gathering 83 million views in just ten days. On April 10, Netflix rolled out “Nature Predator” (original title “Trash”), a shark movie starring Phoebe Dynevor, one of the stars of “Bridgerton.”
But with these new arrivals, Netflix is also rotating out some mainstays of the genre. Following “Back to the Future,” which is set to leave the platform on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, another standout is departing soon: Denis Villeneuve’s “Arrival” (original French title: “Premier contact”), which will be removed from the streaming service on Thursday, April 30.
‘Arrival': A Modern Sci-Fi Masterpiece
Highly rated at 4.1 out of 5 by France’s AlloCiné users and press, Villeneuve’s 2016 film has been called one of the best science fiction releases of recent years. As reported by “20 Minutes”:
“Denis Villeneuve revolutionizes science fiction cinema with ‘Arrival.' This cross between Stanley Kubrick's ‘2001: A Space Odyssey’ and Steven Spielberg's ‘Close Encounters of the Third Kind’ is as innovative as it is moving.”
“Le Parisien” described it as “a sublime science fiction fable,” while “Ouest France” praised:
“Denis Villeneuve delivers an SF masterpiece as moving as it is intelligent.”
What Makes ‘Arrival' Unmissable?
The film’s premise is both mysterious and urgent: strange extraterrestrial ships appear simultaneously across the globe. Authorities recruit linguistics expert Louise Banks, played by Amy Adams, to decode what the visitors are trying to communicate. As tensions mount and fear of major conflict grows, humanity teeters on the edge of confrontation. Louise and her team race against time to solve the puzzle, with every decision carrying weight for her own future—and potentially for all of humankind.
Catch It Before It’s Gone
Cult classics often rotate in and out of streaming libraries, but films that combine intelligence and deep emotion are rare. ‘Arrival’ is one of those standouts. If it’s on your watchlist, don’t let April 30 sneak up on you. Your future self will thank you—and who knows, you might come away with a new perspective on communication before the closing credits roll.
