From the Netherlands to Netflix’s Top Spots—Step Aside, Scandinavia
If you feel like you’ve missed out on popular series from 2025, you're not alone. Scandinavian crime stories have drawn millions to their screens, but this time, it's the Netherlands taking the spotlight—a country many mistake for being part of Scandinavia.
This Dutch film, iHostage, soared right into Netflix’s top 5, ranking in the number two spot just behind “The Batman” with Robert Pattinson in April. It’s quite the feat for a Dutch production, landing just behind a major Hollywood blockbuster. So, what’s driving this film’s buzz?
iHostage: Inspired by a Real-Life Apple Store Ordeal
Psychological Tension—Not Your Usual Thriller
Don’t expect a traditional action-packed thriller. iHostage stands out by leaving the attacker’s identity hidden for much of the runtime—you won’t even know his name until about 50 minutes in. The suspense centers on both uncovering the motivation behind the attack and exploring the inner worlds of its main characters. The film’s deliberate pace and psychological depth might remind viewers of Scandinavian crime dramas.
Divisive Reception: iHostage Sparks Debate
Despite its popularity on Netflix, ratings have been mixed. On Allociné, France’s well-known film review site, it earned just 3.1 out of 5 stars, and Google users have echoed that skepticism. Some viewers find the film too slow, especially since it takes nearly an hour to reveal the attacker’s identity. Others suggest it comes off as an extended Apple commercial. On the flip side, fans have praised the acting and the strong story. As one reviewer put it:
“Impossible to stop watching before the end. Excellent actors. A sensible and very interesting story.”
And another noted:
“A suspenseful show just right for relaxing—no need to overthink. Not a masterpiece, but a nice series that deserves some recognition.”
