Stressed about lending your phone and exposing all your secrets? You’re not alone! Thankfully, there’s a clever Android trick hiding in plain sight: guest mode. Time to breathe easier—let’s discover how to let someone borrow your phone without handing over the keys to your whole digital kingdom.

Why Guest Mode Is a Lifesaver (For Both You and Your Phone)

Our smartphones are now the gateways to our digital lives. They harbor our messages, contacts, files, apps—basically, our entire universe in palm-sized form. Sometimes, circumstances require us to hand over our phone to someone else, whether it’s a curious child, a forgetful friend, or that uncle who insists on making a quick phone call. The big question: how do you lend your phone without giving access to your private apps, files, and contacts?

This is precisely the scenario where Android’s guest mode (also called guest account or profile) comes to the rescue. It creates a clear separation between your data and the temporary user—kind of like offering a hotel room that seals off your bedroom and diary.

How to Set Up and Use Guest Mode

This quick guide is based on a OnePlus 6 running Android 10 with Oxygen 10.3.10, but don’t fret! Even if your device or Android version varies, the steps and terminology should be similar enough to follow without confusion.

  • Head to your system settings. Scroll down to the System section.
  • Look for the line labeled Multiple Users.
  • Enable this feature if you haven’t already. Two accounts will appear: yours, and the intriguing newcomer—guest mode.
  • From here, you can also create more permanent user profiles if frequent sharing is in your future.

Before jumping in, notice the gear icon to the right. This leads to call options. If you allow the guest to make calls, Android will warn you: your call history will be shared with the guest profile. Names remain hidden (only phone numbers are visible), so consider clearing your recent calls for extra privacy.

What Happens in Guest Mode? (No, It Won’t Swallow Your Data)

Switching to guest mode, your phone will feel brand new—like it just rolled off the factory floor. There’s no lock screen set, no personalization. Don’t panic! Your own profile hasn’t gone anywhere. Android simply isolates the guest environment in its own little walled garden. The guest can install their own apps, but will need to sign in with their Google account first.

  • Guest mode is ideal for occasional, short-term lending.
  • If you’ll be lending regularly (say, to a family member), it’s better to set up a dedicated user profile. This keeps environments separated and avoids the headaches of setting up from scratch every time.
  • Even as a temporary measure, guest mode offers pretty much full access to the phone’s main features: Wi-Fi, mobile data, Bluetooth, NFC, geolocation, battery saver, camera, and all default apps. Additional apps must be installed through Google Play.
  • Guests cannot switch back to the device owner’s profile or disable multiple users—that’s all safeguarded behind a lock screen, whether it’s a PIN, pattern, password, or biometric scan.

How (and Why) to Remove the Guest Profile

Once you have your phone back, you’ll probably want to remove the guest account—unless your helpful borrower beats you to it, perhaps to keep their own digital tracks private!

Deleting the guest profile is permanent: it erases all actions, data, and apps linked to the guest account. Afterward, your phone will redirect to your main profile’s lock screen. Once you unlock, you’ll return to the setup page for guest mode and secondary profiles. Simple.

Unsure how to zap the guest account? Just follow the same route you took to create multiple users—it’s easy and straightforward.

So, next time someone needs to borrow your phone, let them in on guest mode instead of risking your entire digital identity. And if your phone-sharing routine is here to stay, a dedicated user profile will save you from infinite setup loops (and the dreaded Android tutorials each time you reset). Your privacy and sanity will thank you!
