With Street View offering sharper and more detailed images than ever, some people have begun to notice just how much of their private lives are visible online. The good news? You can blur your home on Google Maps in just a few clicks — and it only takes a few minutes to do it.

Why privacy on Street View matters

Ever stumbled across your own home on Street View and felt a twinge of unease? You’re not alone. Since Google’s mapping cars began circling the globe, snapping every road and corner, the convenience of digital maps has also come with new questions about privacy and security.

It’s easy to forget that these 360-degree images aren’t just roads and landmarks — they often include parked cars, children playing, open windows, and even house numbers. Though Google’s system automatically blurs faces and licence plates, it’s not perfect. A missed blur here or there can reveal more than you’d like to share.

Fortunately, Google has made it relatively simple to request a blurred image of your home, car, or even yourself.

How to blur your house on Google Maps

You don’t need to be a tech expert to do this. Here’s the step-by-step process anyone can follow:

  1. Open Google Maps on your computer.
  2. Enter your address in the search bar, then drag the yellow Street View figure (the little person icon) onto your street.
  3. Once you’ve found the view of your home, click the “Report a problem” link in the bottom-right corner of the image.
  4. A form will appear asking what you’d like to blur: your house, face, vehicle, licence plate, or another object.
  5. Adjust the red box to cover the part of the image you want to hide.
  6. Fill in your email address, complete the reCAPTCHA box, and submit your request.

Google will then review your submission. Most cases are processed within a few days; however, processing times may be longer during busy periods.

It’s worth noting that if multiple Street View images of your address exist (Google sometimes stores versions from different years), you’ll need to repeat the process for each one.

What about Apple Maps?

If you use Apple Maps, there’s a similar option for privacy protection — though the process works slightly differently. You can either send an email directly to MapsImageCollection@apple.com with details about the image and location, or, if you’re on an iPhone or iPad, open the Look Around feature, find the image in question, and select Report an Issue.

Apple will then investigate and can blur homes, vehicles, or other identifiable details upon request.

A simple digital boundary

It’s surprisingly easy to overlook the vast amount of personal detail the internet contains. From satellite photos to property listings, our homes have never been more visible. But with tools like these, we can at least set some boundaries online — deciding what’s public and what stays private.

I remember helping a neighbour do this after she noticed her car’s licence plate was obvious on Street View. She was amazed at how quick it was — less than five minutes from start to finish — and the update appeared a few days later.

While Street View remains a brilliant invention for navigation and exploration, it’s nice to know we still have control over what the world sees. So, if you’ve ever worried about your privacy, take those few seconds today — and give your digital home a little blurred protection.

  1. How to remove the blur from your home would be more helpful information. As the article points out, it is very easy to blur, even if the individual requesting should not be authorized to do so. Undoing it seems to be ridiculously difficult.
