If you’ve ever used Android’s Circle to Search feature, you already know how addictive it is. Need to look up that celebrity’s name mid-video? Just draw a circle. Want to translate a menu on the fly? Circle it. Now, this fan-favourite tool is quietly levelling up—with a powerful new upgrade that could make it even more indispensable.
From still images to real-time translation
Circle to Search started as a clever way to interact with what's on your screen. Instead of copying text or switching apps, you could tap and trace around what you wanted more info on—whether it was a word, logo, or landmark. And as Android users quickly discovered, it’s brilliant for translation too: scan a sign, highlight a menu, and boom—instant understanding.
But Google has bigger plans. The next evolution? Live Translate. That’s right. Instead of translating static text only, Android is preparing a feature that can translate dynamic content in real time—think subtitles on a video, flashing signs, or even animated GIFs.
How the feature works (so far)
Although it hasn’t been officially rolled out yet, early versions of Live Translate have been spotted in testing. When activated via the new app drawer (also in beta), users are prompted to choose whether they want to translate everything on screen or just specific apps. Once enabled, a glowing multicolored border appears around the screen, confirming that real-time translation mode is active.
A floating “pill” button appears on the side, allowing users to move it around the screen. This tool will enable you to select your target language, limit the translation to a specific screen area, or disable the feature entirely. It's an elegant touch—functionality without clutter—and feels right in line with Android’s user-first design approach.
It’s still early days—but the potential is huge
It’s worth noting that the current version of Live Translate hasn’t been thoroughly tested with videos or complex motion, so that the final version may differ. Still, the feature is already showing promise. Translating real-time content on screen could be a game-changer for travellers, international students, or anyone trying to navigate foreign content with ease.
Whether you're trying to catch what’s being said in a video without subtitles or understand a dynamic display in another language, this upgrade makes the Android experience feel more intuitive and borderless.
Another step in Google's AI-powered ecosystem
Circle to Search was already a highlight for many Android users, especially on newer Pixel and Samsung devices. With Live Translate on the horizon, it’s another reminder of how Google continues to weave AI and convenience into its ecosystem—turning what used to require several steps into one seamless gesture. So keep your eyes peeled. When this feature rolls out officially, it won’t just change how we search. It’ll change how we understand the world around us.
