Now your thumb muscles won’t be bigger than your actual ones anymore. Chrome has cut out the stretching part of your search.

Even with search suggestions making your work easier, Chrome’s address bar still sits too high. That means you have to stretch your thumb, use a second hand, or adjust your grip, especially on taller phones. Google is now finally giving Android users a choice in where the bar lives. An update has officially rolled out to help you customize your browser. Here's how to do it.

Android finally steals Chrome iOS feature we've always wanted

The new Chrome update on Android gives you the power to shift the address bar from the top of your screen to the bottom. Once the update hits your device, the browser will let you reposition the address bar through two simple actions.

You can either long-press directly on the address bar and choose to move it to the bottom or go to Chrome’s settings and find the option labeled Address bar. Then you can pick the location that suits you best.

This is one feature I’ve always wanted Google to steal from iOS. If you’ve used an iPhone, you know that the browser bar on Safari is comfortably placed at the bottom by default.

Although Android users have had the freedom to customize so many other parts of their phone experience, this one thing has stayed rigid for years. It's great that Google has finally removed this pain point and pushed closer to one-hand usability.

If people constantly find it hard to navigate an interface, even one they love, they’re more likely to abandon the app altogether. It might not happen instantly, but over time, small annoyances build up and make competitor solutions enticing. As aforementioned, the update is rolling out gradually. If you haven’t seen it yet, be patient as it usually takes time and depends on your location.

Do you really know your Chrome address bar?

For clarification, the address bar is the pill shaped or rectangular space at the top of your browser where you type in website URLs. For example, www.google.com or youtube.com. It also acts as a search bar where you can type in questions, phrases, or anything you’d normally search on Google, and it will show you results directly.

That’s why it’s sometimes called the “omnibox”. It also shows security info, such as padlocks for secure sites, the Gemini icon, and suggestions for websites to visit based on your history or bookmarks as you type.

It's easy to confuse the address bar with the search box that appears in the middle of a new tab with the Google logo above it. But they’re not the same. That center box is merely a shortcut and a visual design that mimics search.

Even when you type into it, what you're really doing is using the actual address bar, which processes the search or loads the URL. You can't move that one. That aside, it’s honestly nice to see Google still consistently polishing the Chrome experience, even while the threat of a major breakup looms ahead.
