Why you might end up in an unwanted WhatsApp group
It's a scenario many WhatsApp users know: you open the app and see you've been added to a new group by someone you don't recognize. Usually, this is spam or a group that doesn't relate to you at all.
While WhatsApp allows you to leave any group immediately and mute the notifications, this only works after you've already been added—so you need to repeat the process every time it happens. Thankfully, there's a preventive setting you can use instead.
How to stop strangers from adding you to WhatsApp groups
WhatsApp lets you limit who can add you to groups by adjusting your privacy settings. By default, anyone can add you. But you can choose to restrict this ability to just your contacts, or even specify certain contacts to exclude from adding you.
Here's how to update these settings:
Go to WhatsApp's settings and find the privacy options related to groups. The default will likely be set to “Everyone.” You can switch this to “My contacts” or “My contacts except…”—the latter lets you pick specific people who shouldn't be able to add you, though naming many individuals could be time-consuming. Once you've chosen your preference, confirm with the green checkmark.
Things to consider before you change your settings
This adjustment can have side effects. If you're added to a group for work, school, a building association, or similar—by someone who isn't already saved in your contacts—you could miss out, since only your contacts will be able to add you directly. However, this setting isn't permanent. You can change it back anytime or avoid the problem by saving the phone numbers of people who may need to add you, like colleagues or fellow parents.
If someone outside your contacts wants to add you
WhatsApp also offers an extra layer of security. If someone who's not in your contacts tries to add you to a group, the app prompts them to send you a private invitation instead. You'll receive a link by direct message, valid for 72 hours, letting you decide whether to join the group or ignore it without any pressure.
With these settings in place, you can minimize the chances of winding up in unrelated or unwanted WhatsApp groups—leaving you in control of your group chats and notifications.
