Samsung phones come with some of the best screens in the game, if not the actual best. For a lot of people, those displays are a compelling reason to choose a Galaxy device over the competition.

At the same time though, it seems like there might be an issue with displays across many Samsung generations. Recently, reports came out about a software update triggering a vertical green line to appear on the screen. Samsung has acknowledged the issue and will actually replace your screen for free — but only if you live in a certain country.

Green Line On Your Galaxy S21 Or S22 Phone In India? Samsung Will Replace Your Screen For Free

Whether it falls and cracks or it spontaneously starts misbehaving, one of the worst smartphone issues to deal with is a defective screen, and I think most of us can agree. It's why having a vertical green line running across your display out of nowhere qualifies as more than just “annoying”.

Recently, I wrote about how some Samsung Galaxy S21 users were being afflicted with a vertical green line on their displays following a software update, and a little bit of research showed that this wasn't an entirely new issue. Starting from the Galaxy S20 series, you can find quite a few complaints online on platforms like Reddit. Just based on the symptoms, you can tell it's a hardware issue and not software. Unfortunately, that means the only way out is a physical repair.

Well, thanks to Tarun Vats on X, we know that if you live in India and use any device from the S20, Note 20, or S21 series, or if you have an S22 Ultra, you will get the privilege of having your screen replaced for free if it has the green line issue, whether the phone is under warranty or not. Plus, you can even get a battery replacement thrown in too. However, the only real catch is that you need to book your appointment before April 30th.

An important thing to keep in mind is that this does not include the Samsung Galaxy S21 FE or the Samsung Galaxy S22 and S22+. I'm not sure why Samsung chose to exclude these phones if they're fine with replacing the likely costlier S22 Ultra display. But who knows why Samsung moves the way they move?

Green Lines On Smartphone Screens Aren't Samsung-Exclusive, But They Seem Susceptible

Samsung is the biggest Android manufacturer in the world, and over the years, they've always been near the top. Since they're a popular choice, it makes sense that a lot of green line issues we hear about are from Samsung devices. If you do a little searching though, you'll find that this problem is hardly specific to phones from the Korean manufacturer.

Go ahead, let's try something. Search “Pixel green line” or “OnePlus green line” and see the results you get. In fact, replace those brands with any other smartphone brand and you will likely find results that show phones manifesting in the same way. The picture above is a Motorola, for instance.

Samsung phones in India seem to be affected the most (which is likely why Samsung felt only one country needs this luxury), but there's a much larger sample size, it's a hotter climate, and there may also be quality control concerns. Overall, it's not too certain if there's truly something that Samsung is doing wrong, but if there is, we'd love it if they could fix whatever manufacturing problem there is, and quickly, please.
