Samsung's Galaxy Watch series has featured a round dial since its debut. The electronics giant ditched square or rectangular watch displays when it stopped making Galaxy Gear smartwatches. In a turn of events, though, it's being reported that a ‘squarish' or rectangular watch display is being considered for an upcoming Galaxy Watch model.
Dare To Be Square
While other brands, such as Oppo, produce smartwatches with rectangular or squarish displays, Apple's Watch series is the most common example of such a design. When you think of a smartwatch with a rectangular face, you likely first think of Apple's offerings before anyone else's.
According to a report by SamMobile, however, Samsung is considering moving back to a squarish display for an upcoming Galaxy Watch model, which will no doubt cause huge amounts of consternation for fans of round watch displays.
Goodbye Rotating Bezel?
Of course, one of the obvious and much-loved features of particular Galaxy Watches is the rotating bezel, which will not be possible on a watch with a display that isn't round. Could you imagine attempting to twist a rectangular bezel?
One theory is that since Samsung tends to launch the Galaxy Watch in two versions, perhaps one variant will sport a circular display and rotating bezel, and the second will feature a squarish display. We don't see this happening, in all honesty, but it could be the case. Maybe.
But. Why?
It could be that Samsung has calculated that people want a watch with a squarish design, or it might be that it's a technological thing, such as a new type of AMOLED display that doesn't suit round displays. It may even be software because Samsung has a new feature that works best on squarish displays. Or it could be that 2024 is the date that Samsung penciled into its calendar to review its smartwatch strategy. It could be any or all of those reasons. It may also happen that Samsung decides to continue with round displays. There are many possible reasons, and it will be interesting to see whose bingo card gets called.
When?
No one, including Samsung, knows for sure if it will happen, never mind when. It's said that a return to squarish watch displays is only being considered. Would Samsung want to disrupt its Galaxy Watch series, which is renowned for its circular watch dials, at this point, with the seventh edition possibly being prepped for launch in July?
We don't know. Samsung will crunch the numbers, and if the Galaxy Watch 6 sales don't match its expectations, we expect the Korean company to correct the course sooner rather than later. There's a lot we don't know about this rumor for sure. And maybe, after six or seven models of the Galaxy Gear, it's time to shake up the design.
Would You Buy A Squarish Galaxy Watch?
That's probably the main question that Samsung is trying to figure out. No doubt bloggers would revolt at the sight of a squarish Samsung smartwatch. We all remember the original LG Watch—or at least, I do.
If the next Galaxy Watch comes with a squarish display, let us know in the comments below if you would buy it or prefer one with a circular display.
