Google's Gemini AI model is just like having ChatGPT or any other modern AI model built right into your Android smartphone. Sure, Google Assistant is kind of like that, but Gemini has the potential to do a lot more because of its human-grade understanding of text and images.

Gemini AI can already do a whole lot and definitely has the potential to do a lot more. The Gemini app launched about a week ago, running on the Gemini 1.0 model, and Google has already announced Gemini 1.5 will take its place soon.

Google released Gemini AI 1.0 in a Pro and Ultra form, and both of them can do a bunch of cool things, similar to ChatGPT, but instead, integrated with different aspects of your device. However, thanks to a February 15th announcement, we know that Google has already developed Gemini 1.5 and is releasing it for testing.

There's a lot of technical jargon involved in understanding why Gemini 1.5 is so much better than Gemini 1.0, but there are some ways to break it down into a form that we regular people understand:

  • You'll get faster processing in a single run. For example, Gemini 1.5 can process one hour of video or eleven hours of audio in the blink of an eye.
  • The summarization capabilities are immense, demonstrated when the model was given a 402-page transcript about the Apollo 11 mission to the moon to digest and summarize.
  • It is multimodal and can comprehend different forms of media, not just text. Gemini 1.5 could explain plot points in a 44-minute silent movie!
  • Want to use it for problem-solving? 100,000 lines of code were no problem for this AI model, as it could suggest aspects that could be better and explain what parts of the code did.

So, Gemini AI is like ChatGPT on steroids, by the sound of things, but what can it actually do with all that power when you install the mobile app on your smartphone?

Well, first of all, just like ChatGPT, you can converse on pretty much any topic under the sun, and it will converse naturally with you based on your responses. You can have it improve the pieces of writing you've made and even translate them. Summarization is a strong point, so do you want a topic made succinct? Gemini will handle that.

Since it is multimodal, you can even take a picture of something in the Gemini app and ask it different questions based on what it sees. That's just the tip of the iceberg, but it is easy to see how cool it can be.

What Will Be The Fate Of Bard And Google Assistant?

Well, Bard is dead. Sort of. Bard has been entirely rechristened as Gemini, so the name lives on in spirit. With that name change comes a standalone application for it (which will be coming to iOS relatively soon).

Even though there's an app for Gemini, it won't replace Google Assistant entirely yet. You can still have both on your smartphone, though only one can be configured as your default virtual assistant.
