Goodbye HBO Max, hello to Max with the more expensive $20 Ultimate Ad-Free tier

Today's the day that HBO Max goes away to be reincarnated as the new Max entertainment app from Warner Bros. which offers more content than the old app. The Max app launch coincides with the debut of the new Ultimate Ad-Free tier which costs $20 monthly and provides access to almost 8 times more 4K content than previously available on the old HBO Max app.

It's not all milk and honey, however, because the advent of the new Ultimate Ad-Free tier means that 4K streaming will be removed after a period of at least 6 months from now. Once the grace period is finished, you'll need to upgrade to the Ultimate Ad-Free tier to carry on watching content in 4K resolution, which means paying $20 monthly. You can save by paying $200 upfront for the whole year which saves you $40. Of course, Warner Bros. has taken the opportunity to raise the standard ad-free tier to $16 monthly, and the ad-supported tier is now $10 a month.

Besides hogging the 4K content, the Ultimate Ad-Free tier will also offer Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision for selected content and streaming devices.

HBO Max subscribers will either have their apps automatically updated or prompted to download the new Max app, with their plan, profiles, avatars, settings, “Continue Watching”, and “My List” items waiting for them.
