Google has a quirky way of handling new features and experimental things in their apps. Sometimes they offer early testing of features, but many times they'll just turn things on for select groups of users, take things away, change stuff up, and leave many of us scratching our heads at how to use YouTube or some other app that we've launched 20 times a day for three years. It's not always a great experience, even if sometimes you luck into some cool new feature six weeks before everyone else.
The new plan to change all that is to spin up some beta programs for tons of Google's apps, and let users opt in to test these things out.
New Google beta apps
This new initiative will see Google Clock, News, Play Books, YouTube Music, YouTube TV, and Carrier Services all get an opt-in beta program. To make that even simpler, Google is handling all of this through the Play Store, so you won't have to fiddle with extra apps or hoops to jump through.
If you're interested in testing out any of these apps, you just find its listing on the Play Store, scroll down to the bottom, and select that you want to become a tester. If there's a new build available for that particular app, your phone will immediately download it and let you see what's new. That currently only works for YouTube Music, but the program is just four days old; you can expect this list to grow (and probably add more Google apps) over the next few weeks.
If you want to get in on the ground floor and see what wild stuff Google has cooking for its clock app, hit the Play Store and start downloading. Be sure to let us know if you see anything new.
