YouTube is running a new experiment where users can finally download its videos on their desktop browsers without the need for insecure third-party apps or sites. The new ability is available via the Labs section on YouTube for Premium subscribers only.

Besides being limited to YouTube Premium subscribers, the download on desktop feature is in the testing phase until October 19th, after which it's unclear whether or not it will prove worthy of being a permanent feature.

First spotted by Android Police, the download on desktop feature should be available on desktop browsers such as Chrome, Edge, and Opera, which means that it should work on Windows, Mac, and Chrome OS devices. You can download videos in up to 1080p resolution by tapping the Download button on the toolbar below the content, which will then be available to view at YouTube.com/feed/downloads.

If you do download YouTube videos already, is this official feature something you might use or would you still use third-party apps and websites? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
