When is 5G not 5G? When its AT&T's 5G ‘Evolution' that is actually just plain old LTE and was simply a mechanism to keep its subscribers from jumping ship to other carriers with an actual, if tiny, 5G network. AT&T's 5G Evolution was displayed as the ever-so-slightly misleading 5GE icon, which eventually led to the National Advertising Review Board (NARB) recommending that the carrier should discontinue advertising the product.
AT&T has said that as a supporter of the self-regulatory process, it will comply with NARB's decision, despite the fact that it “…respectfully disagrees with the reasoning and the result reached by the panel majority“.
The carrier went on to state the following to Light Reading:
“AT&T's customers nationwide continue to benefit from dramatically superior speeds and performance that its current network provides.”
NARB's recommendation that AT&T cease its advertising of the 5G Evolution product is only that, the carriers subscribers will still see the 5GE icon displayed on their smartphones. Also, as the carrier is close to completing the rollout of its lowband, 850MHz 5G network, AT&T will just switch over to advertising “Nationwide 5G”, omitting the misleading “Evolution” descriptor.
So. That brings the 5G Evolution to an end, but you'll still see the 5GE icon on your phone if you are an AT&T subscriber. The question is, do you care either way?
