Huawei P40 Pro

A new render of the upcoming Huawei P40 Pro has leaked, showcasing a brand new design, camera layout, and color options. If you were thinking Huawei would avoid the massive camera module trend of 2020, think again.

Huawei P40 Pro

Huawei's set to announce these phones sometime in March, although we're not expecting Google Play services here, either. We do know they'll be rocking the latest in hardware from Huawei, including a Kirin 990 CPU with 5G connectivity, a maximum of 12GB of RAM and 512GB of storage, and an in-display fingerprint scanner.

The rear of the phone is becoming the focus point, though. Huawei looks to be cramming a huge array of cameras into their next flagship phone, including the standard layout of standard/telephoto/ultrawides lenses paired with a ToF sensor. The Huawei P40 Pro has also been rumored to use a 10x optical zoom periscope lens, which should give us some of the best zoom we've ever seen on a smartphone.

That camera layout isn't exactly identical to the Pixel 4, but it does seem to follow that general trend that we've been seeing at the end of 2019 and into 2020. The iPhone 11 family adopted the square modules, and the Pixel 4 followed suit. Samsung's latest devices are expected to look pretty similar, and Huawei will be following familiar ground. The bezels on the front are at least razor thin, so it's generally a pretty good looking phone, so long as you don't hate camera hole punchouts.

Five new colors

The leak also shows off a few new colors for the Huawei P40 Pro and its regular sibling, including black, blush gold, silver frost, deep sea blue, and ice white. These color options will apply to both the Huawei P40 Pro and regular P40, so you won't have to step up to the higher end model just to get the color you want. I personally really dig the blue, but it looks like all the colors are pretty slick looking. The ice white is the only one that seems reminiscent of the color-shifting material that seemed so popular last year.

We also know the phones will use EMUI 10 based on Android 10 right out of the gate, so you at least won't be behind on updates right away. We've been pretty impressed with EMUI 10 so far, so there's no complaints there.

Huawei still struggles in western markets

Despite the Huawei P40 Pro looking like a pretty great phone, it's still going to struggle to make waves around the globe. Huawei has consistently struggled to break into western markets, and while that's not entirely their fault, that doesn't change the fact that they haven't made a dent in Samsung and Apple's popularity.

Losing Google Play services is something that they haven't been able to figure out a way around, even with a pretty strong app selection in China. Couple that with the US trade ban still in effect, and 2020 looks like it'll still be a tough year for Huawei, no matter how good the P40 and P40 Pro end up being.

They can still coast on the P30 Pro for a while, however; they've been quietly rehashing the same phone with new colors and upgrades to Android 10/EMUI 10 in order to get around some of those trade bans. Since the phones were technically released before the trade ban went into effect, they are allowed to keep selling them. They just can't make any major modifications like upgrading the CPU, since the Kirin 990 5G chip isn't certified for sale in the US.

With the P30 series still being a really great family of phones, simple updates to increase RAM and storage capacity can certainly buy Huawei some time. How much time, exactly? Well, that's the problem they'll have to figure out.
