Cord cutters rejoice – Plex has followed through on a September announcement that it would offer a free streaming service by the end of 2019. After initially teaming up with Warner Bros., thousands of ad-supported movies and TV shows are now available on the Plex app. Specifically, you can stream “free movies, TV shows, extreme sports films, music documentaries and Bollywood musicals.” The app is available on Android and iOS, and most streaming devices like Roku, Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV, game consoles and Android TV.

This free, ad-supported video-on-demand service will be available in over 200 countries with content from several major studios like Warner Bros., MGM, Lionsgate and more. Current Plex users will see a new Free to Watch category under a Movies & TV on Plex sidebar item.
The new streaming service is free for everyone, but Plex Pass subscribers that have enhanced features for curating and streaming personal collections will also see ads (but never in their own content). Plex claims that only one-third of the ads from traditional cable will appear and that the majority of content will be available worldwide (some will be restricted by region). Brief commercial interruptions for free streaming seems like a worthwhile compromise and this gives cable and satellite subscribers paying a hundred dollars per month or more another incentive to cut the cord.
