Google has been building out dark mode updates to many of their major apps, but there are still a few that are missing the blacked out interface. Gmail is a big one, which is pretty strange considering just how popular Gmail is around the world and how important it is to Google's business.
It looks like Google is finally starting their work on adding a dark mode to their email app, though, at least according to its latest apk.
As a warning, the bits hinting at dark mode here aren't anywhere close to enough to qualify as Gmail actually having dark mode, and it's probably going to be a few months before it's ready to roll out. But with the latest update, there are signs of dark mode working in the settings app, and absolutely nowhere else. It's most likely just the starting point for Google to begin theming the entire app.
There's no user-facing toggle for this, either, so you won't be able to manually turn it on. That will probably come much later when the rest of the app has something to show.
But by the end of the year, hopefully we can check our emails without getting blinded at night.
