At the 2019 E3 video game convention in Los Angeles this week, Tesla revealed that they are planning to make YouTube available via the main infotainment screens in their vehicles. Support for YouTube should drop when Tesla pushes out version 10 of the software stack that Tesla makes available in their vehicles.
The journey to having YouTube, and potentially other video streaming services, available on the Tesla's screens dates back to last year when Elon Musk responded to a poster on Twitter who asked about the potential to make videos available on the screen. At the time, Musk said it would be a feature included in version 10 of the software, although he did not specify any specific service at the time.
Although Tesla's official statement at E3 only mentioned YouTube, the door could be open for other streaming services to also be available. The company also revealed the game Fallout Shelter would be coming to Tesla screens with the next update.
If you are not familiar with how Tesla offers up options like this, they do require vehicles to be in Park for users to access them. This makes sense not only for those times when a Tesla owner is waiting around for some random reason, but even more so when they have had to stop and hook up to a charger for a little while to get recharged. Catching some videos or playing a game is one way to pass the time.
