Just when fans thought Netflix had closed the book on one of its most popular series, the streaming giant has tossed in a new twist: there’s a spin-off in the works, but its main character wasn’t part of the original books.

From sudden cancellation to a new project

Back in May, Netflix stunned viewers by announcing that The Lincoln Lawyer—a fan favorite with a 92% Rotten Tomatoes rating—would end after its fifth season. This surprised not just fans, but also the show’s creators, who reportedly felt there was more story to tell.

Season 4 had just premiered, introducing a pivotal new chapter for Manuel Garcia-Rulfo's character. Yet within weeks, Netflix confirmed season 5 would be the last. The abrupt decision left many questioning what guided the move—and now, the story has taken another turn.

A spin-off in the works, centered on a brand-new character

Shortly after the cancellation news, showrunners Ted Humphrey and Dailyn Rodriguez suggested in a spring statement that while ending the series was difficult, it also opened the door for potential spin-offs. Now, Netflix has reportedly approved development of a series centered on a character played by Cobie Smulders (known for How I Met Your Mother).

The twist? Smulders’ character—introduced in the season 4 finale as Mickey Haller's half-sister—isn’t from Michael Connelly’s original books. Her existence took both the series’ lead and longtime fans by surprise, as she played a crucial role in the finale and revealed a previously unknown family connection.

According to speculation, this new character may be a creative stand-in for another iconic figure from Connelly’s novels: Harry Bosch. However, since Prime Video holds the rights to Connelly’s Bosch series—including Harry Bosch, Bosch: Legacy, and Ballard and Bosch: Start of Watch—Netflix can’t use that character, possibly prompting the introduction of this new sibling.

So far, Netflix has not officially commented beyond what’s been reported. The team expected to write the spin-off includes Humphrey, Dailyn Rodriguez, and Matthew J. Lieberman, and Smulders is anticipated to star.

Meet Emi: The half-sister entering the spotlight

The new character, Emi, won’t be waiting for her own show to make her mark. According to early information, Emi will play a major role in the fifth and final season of The Lincoln Lawyer, alongside returning cast members. Here’s what to expect, based on the official synopsis:

Mickey Haller’s (Manuel Garcia-Rulfo) world is turned upside down when his half-sister Emi (Cobie Smulders), who he never knew existed, asks for his help to clear a woman wrongly convicted of murder. As family ties and hidden secrets come to light, Mickey digs into a difficult habeas corpus case to challenge a six-year-old conviction. The deeper he investigates, the more he faces powerful opposition. Meanwhile, his trusted team—Lorna (Becki Newton), Izzy (Jazz Raycole), and Cisco (Angus Sampson)—are dealing with their own challenges. After narrowly avoiding a wrongful conviction himself in season 4, Mickey is now determined to fight for justice again. But as he unravels corruption and deception, he must confront the complex legacy of both his chosen family and the one he never knew he had.

There’s never a dull moment in Mickey Haller’s world—and on Netflix, no story is truly over, especially when brand-new relatives are waiting in the wings.
