In case you weren't already aware, 5G is a pretty big thing for consumers, smartphone brands as well as network providers. The UK saw its first commercially available 5G network switched on by the BT-owned network operator EE during an event in London. The first 5G smartphone available in the UK is the OnePlus 7 Pro 5G which is a reworking of the 4G OnePlus 7 Pro with the same features in the same size body but with a 5G modem in tow.

EE says that it is rolling out 5G connectivity to the following UK cities: London, Cardiff, Manchester, Edinburgh, Birmingham, and Belfast. The network operator will roll out the 5G network in these ten additional locations by the end of 2019:

  • Glasgow, Newcastle, Liverpool, Leeds, Hull, Sheffield, Nottingham, Leicester, Coventry, and Bristol.

The OnePlus 7 Pro 5G is now available to pick up from EE (online/in-store/ telesales) in the spectacular Nebula Blue finish with 8GB RAM and 256GB of built-in storage. Plans start from £59 monthly for plans with 30GB of data with a £50 payment upfront. It isn't exactly cheap.

If the OnePlus 7 Pro 5G isn't to your taste, then Samsung's Galaxy S10 5G can be pre-ordered with available stock in-store from June 6 at £69. OPPO's Reno 5G with its motorized wedge that houses the pop-up selfie camera is also possible to pre-order from EE for £54 per month. Last, but not least, LG's V50 ThinQ 5G will be available for £69 each month.

You may have noticed that Huawei hasn't been mentioned; this is because although the Mate 20 X 5G was slated to launch on EE's 5G network, the Chinese company's current blacklisting issues with the US has resulted in network providers pressing the pause button on relations. Bad news for Huawei is great news for Samsung, Oppo, and OnePlus, though, with each of them getting a bigger slice of the UK 5G pie.

Are you excited that the vaunted 5G network is finally, albeit slowly, coming online in the UK?
