Qualcomm has announced a slew of new mobile processors for smartphones coming up this year, and while they may not be quite as exciting as a new 800-series chip, these will likely power some of your favorite mid-range devices.
The announcement includes a Snapdragon 730 and Snapdragon 665, plus a side graded Snapdragon 730G for more specific use-cases.
The Snapdragon 730 chip will be the most common in high-end phones that fall just below the flagship category. Typically you see these device using some of Qualcomm's older processors, but now vendors will have a more current option that includes more up-to-date AI processing and better image capabilities. Qualcomm is talking up the performance chops of this chip, including its Adreno 618 GPU, Vulkan 1.1 support, and 4K HDR video capture for phones that use this CPU.
The 730G is a very similar component, but it's aimed at the current trend of gaming phones. It features very similar processing power, but the GPU is clocked about 15% higher and it sports some proprietary Qualcomm features to keep gaming smooth and running well. There are even WiFi latency management and anti-cheat features baked in.
The Snapdragon 665 is going to be much more common in middle-of-the-road devices, but these are typically where you see the best bang for your buck from a performance/battery life standpoint. You'll still get better AI and camera performance, some enhanced gaming and audio support, and a still very-capable LTE modem able to reach download speeds of 600mbps.
You can expect to see these chips in devices starting in mid-2019.
