Buy a Local Number with Viber and get inbound texts and calls from anyone for $5 4

The popularity of instant messaging apps such as WhatsApp means that it's easier and cheaper than ever before to stay in contact with friends and loved ones the world over. Making it even easier is Viber with its new Local Number service where users can sign up for an American, British, or Canadian number to receive SMS texts and phone calls.

For the moment, at least, the Local Number feature is limited to inbound texts and phone calls. Viber says that the first 10,000 subscribers to the Local Number service will get a lifetime price of $1.99 each month. Once the 10K figure is reached, users will be charged the regular price of $4.99 monthly.

“Anyone who calls this number can reach you as they would with any other local number, and you will receive the call (and even regular text messages) through your Viber app. All you need to do is make sure you have an active internet connection (network or WiFi).”

Once you've accessed the Local Number option by pressing the ‘More' tab in the Viber app, payments can be made via the Play Store, a credit card of with Apple's in-app payments service. While it's available globally, you are restricted to registering UK, US, and Canadian numbers for the time being, although Viber has promised to support more countries as it goes along.

  1. There is no way to pay for the number unless via Google play, and which is not available in my country.
