While this fall has seen the typical release of new smartphones from the usual manufacturers, they all seem to have been working on some side projects that are a bit surprising. In the case of Huawei, an item that has flown mostly under the radar is a pair of new smartwatches that the company appears to be set to reveal when they launch the new Huawei Mate 20 later this month. The Huawei Watch GT Classic (or possibly Fashion instead of Classic) and the Huawei Watch GT Sport models appear to be set as the successors to the Huawei Watch 2 devices.
Some images and information for the new Huawei Watch GT devices suggest they will have two buttons on one side of the casing for navigation input, joining the 1.39-inch touchscreen AMOLED display. The different devices will be distinguished by the color of the watch case with the GT Classic getting a silver body and the GT Sport getting a black body. Both will come with a black bezel. The GT Classic will also get a band that appears to be leather while the Sport version is likely getting a black rubber or silicone band.
Both variants will reportedly carry a compass, a pressure sensor and an accelerometer. A heart-rate monitor is likely to be included as well, but that is not as clear. GPS and NFC chips are also expected to be present. Both devices will also be waterproof, at least to a level making it possible to swim in them. Huawei is giving both of them “Multi-Sport” and “Sport Coach” functions so they can be used for activity and exercise tracking.
One piece of information that may help generate some interest in the devices is the presence of a 420mAh battery, which is large for a smartwatch. Sources indicate Huawei is likely using Qualcomm's latest Snapdragon Wear 3100 chip combined with some aggressive power-saving modes to help extend the life of the device. If a user is content to use the watch with only minimal features turned on they may be able to get 14 days of usage between charges. Normal operation of seven days between charges may be standard for the device and 20 hours in GPS mode is a possibility.
Sources have not confirmed the operating system for the devices, but the suspicion is that these will be Google Wear OS powered devices.
The early estimates are for Huawei to price the Watch GT Sport at 199 euros ($229 USD) and the Watch GT Classic at 229 euros ( $264 USD).
