New Alcatel phones to be announced at MWC 2018

Alcatel has sent out press invites for their event being held in connection with MWC 2018 when they will announce three new smartphones. The company also took to Twitter to post an image of the devices they are launching which include the Alcatel 5, the Alcatel 3V and the Alcatel 1X

The new flagship phone for Alcatel in 2018 is the Alcatel 5. Like so many other manufacturers, Alcatel is moving to a bezel-less design for their top of the line smartphone. Keep in mind the Alcatel 5 is expected to be priced around $300 which would be further down the stack for many other manufacturers. So if Alcatel has figured out how to implement the bezel-less design for such a low price, we may expect to see that design start to creep down to market segments other than the flagship level. Alcatel also puts a unique touch on the design by minimizing the bottom bezel and leaving a strip at the top for things like the camera. That differs from others who are going so far as to create notches at the top for the camera but otherwise stretching the screen right to the edge. In Alcatel’s case, the front-facing camera is actually a dual-lens unit and reportedly will support a face unlock feature.

Moving down the market segments, the Alcatel 3V and Alcatel 1X both appear to support 18:9 display aspect ratios, but do not otherwise incorporate the bezel-less design to a large extent. The phones are targeting the sub-$200 and sub-$100 markets respectively, so hardware is unlikely to be very impressive. However, even the Alcatel 1X will get a fingerprint sensor according to sources while the Alcatel 3V gets a rear-facing dual-camera setup.
