Sony moves to strengthen partnership with LG Display for OLEDs, foldable displays 4

Reports out of Korea indicate Sony and LG Display are strengthening and broadening an existing partnership to bring OLED displays to Sony's smartphone business unit. Sources believe the expansion of the partnership will include flexible displays manufactured by LG to be used in new Sony smartphone devices.

For Sony, the move to OLED displays for smartphones is seen as an extension of the success the company has achieved with their television unit. LG Display has been a supplier for Sony TVs so an expansion into an additional line of business makes sense for both companies. Despite Sony's strong reputation in most electronics markets, their smartphone business has always struggled to gain a foothold though they are number two in their home market of Japan. Bolstering rumors that Sony will be turning to OLED displays to try to step up their game in smartphones is news that they have been advertising for OLED display engineers with smartphone experience.

For foldable displays, the move probably benefits LG Display more. Foldable smartphones are still an uncertain product in the market and how a folding display is successfully incorporated is a big question. LG Display is not waiting for those questions to be answered though as they plan to ramp up production of flexible OLEDs to 15,000 sheets per month in the third quarter. This means they are seeking customers for their capacity.
