Samsung announced today a new option for consumers interested in a “life safety” solution for the home that combines security components, the ability to create a home automation system, and monitoring backed by and provided by ADT. The new Samsung SmartThings ADT system is described as the “safest, easiest, and most flexible DIY security and home solution available for families today.” The new option includes a Home Security Starter Kit and a Home Safety Expansion Pack and will be available through Best Buy, Samsung and SmartThings.

The core of the new system is the Home Security Starter Kit. This kit includes a Security Hub, two Door and Window Detectors, and a Motion Detector. The Security Hub consists of a 7-inch touchscreen control panel that has a built in siren, a battery, cellular data backup, and dual encryption wireless technology. Besides functioning as the hub for the included security devices, the SmartThings platform is capable of supporting connections to a wide variety of third-party devices like doorbells, locks, lights, cameras, thermostats and more. The expansion pack for the system includes additional sensors for items like fire detection, carbon monoxide and water detection.

Besides the hardware and SmartThings platform being provided by Samsung, the company has partnered with ADT to provide monitoring services for consumers who want that extra level of comfort. The ADT service can be added at any time on a month-to-month basis with no long-term commitment. Different levels of service will be available, $14.99 per month for life safety monitoring and $24.99 for security services or both services can be bundled for $34.99 per month. According to Jay Darfler, Senior Vice President, ADT Emerging Markets, “We believe everyone deserves to feel safe, and with this launch, we’re truly redefining the home security industry. By partnering with Samsung SmartThings, we’re able to expand our professional monitoring services to even more customers looking for the smartest and safest DIY home security solution on the market.”

As you may have noticed, the solution is a DIY product meaning neither Samsung nor ADT provide any installation services. Best Buy's Mary Ortizcazarin, VP of Smart Home, says their research into reasons “customers are interested in smart home is the ability to easily monitor and secure their homes, but their wants and needs can vary greatly. The new Samsung SmartThings and ADT partnership gives them more flexibility than ever to control their homes how, when and where they want to.”
