Using your Android device as a wireless keyboard/mouse

RemoteDroid is an app that you can use via Wi-Fi to turn your Android phone into a wireless keyboard and mouse for your computer.

Setting up the RemoteDroid server on your PC

Here are the steps for downloading and running the RemoteDroid server software on your PC. Before you begin you must already have a wireless home network already setup. You will also need Java SE Runtime Environment 1.5 or higher. Last but not least you will of course need a phone running the Android OS.

  1. Go to and download the latest RemoteDroid server zip file.
  2. Extract the downloaded zip file to a folder on your PC. (example: C:\remotedroid)
  3. Now open the location to which you extracted the zip file and run the file RemoteDroidServer.jar
  4. The IP address of the PC RemoteDroidServer is running on will be displayed in the window you have just opened. Remember this IP as you will need it later in this guide.

Setting up the RemoteDroid app on your Android device

Now that you have downloaded and ran the RemoteDroidServer.jar file on the PC that you want to control it is time to configure RemoteDroid on your phone.

  1. Go to the Android Market
  2. Search for the RemoteDroid app, download it, and install it on your phone
  3. Open the RemoteDroid app that you just installed
  4. Enter the IP address of the PC you want to control (This will be the IP from Step 4 above)
  5. Tap Connect
  6. That is it! The large red square on your phone is the mouse capture box, the left green box acts as the left mouse button, the right green box acts as the right mouse button, and the keyboard icon between the green boxes brings up the keyboard input window to allow you to type on your PC.

  7. Enjoy your new wireless mouse and keyboard.

    nice app.. remote anything..

  • autin

does the remotedroid app work with the cliq xt

  • Majestyk

I just downloaded and installed this app and I have to say, it works way better on my media center PC than both the wireless KB/ mouse AND the media center remote control.

    Worth every penny!

  • Yan

This app is NOT on the Android Market. Pointless tutorial

  • Dustin Karnes

@Yan Actually, it is in the Android Market, just checked. Where are you located? May be for US customers only.

  • z

Just tried it and it’s awesome!! I was thinking of buying a wireless keyboard for casual use. I won’t anymore. LOVE IT.

  • NinersFan1956

Just installed and using it with a Droid X. It works great as long as you are using the “Multi-touch keyboard” – I was not successful in using the “Swype” keyboard – maybe a future release.

  • mark

I’m typing this on my computer through this cool android app. It works great. I was going to get a wireless kb/mouse, but this work perfect for what I need.

  • blackspidey08

Using it right now to make this post on my European unlocked HD2! There is scroll support if your laptop has a multi-touch mousepad/trackpad (use 2 fingers on the phones mousepad area and move up and down. side to side for widescreen pages.)

  • dav visor

  • E

It would be really cool if you could use this concept with an Android tablet. That would be really cool.

    – E

  • Khas

You can use it with a tablet. Using with my xoom now.

  • Elane

i have this working great with my vista wndows laptop and my htc evo phone. What would be FABULOUS would be my htc evo as a wireless mouse for my android samsung tablet!!!

  • Darren

If you use the ShareKeyboard App and this app then you can control your laptop with your android device and type on the android device with your laptop keyboard. So in effect you are using your laptop keyboard to type on your laptop, only it’s being routed through your Android device!
    Technology is fun!

  • Chris Woodhouse

@Elane – now that would be brilliant!

  • Chris Woodhouse

I’ve got the Java Remote DroidServer running on my PC (HP Pavilion dv6 running W7 Home Premium SP1) and downloaded the Android RemoteDroid app. I entered the correct IP address and pressed “Connect”, but nothing :-(( When I try the mouse area, there’s no effect. The left and right mouse clicks also give nothing, and if I open Notepad in Windows and try the phone keyboard, nothing there either.

    • Poposepp

did you use wifi? won’t work with 3G etc.

  • dashood

Is this app paid only? I see RemoteDroid Pro, but no free version?

  • Pope

would like to use a 7″ droid tablet with swype (or touchpal) installed as a wireless keyboard for my win7 desktop. will this work?

  • sweet chin music

Does not work on my Droid Charge running Gingerbread

  • Paul

what i find incredible is that in 2011 there are still people who do not have java installed on their pc. this app works great on my acer iconiatab

    • Poposepp

who the hell installs java voluntarily?

      • David

Whenever I get a new computer, the first things I install are Flash and Java…

  • Claud Wintjen

  • pik

works fine here, will give it a go for a while and buy the pro version if its a keeper. I hope it is.

  • pik

to be honest it’s a bit too basic so far. Some way to create gestures for phones like the Galaxy SII etc.

  • AndroidFan

Why all you need to do these setups…go for UnifiedRemote it’s simple, more efficient and has more features.

  • J Collins

AndroidFan    Could you explain your comment, it’s as if your answering a question that hasn’t been asked.

  • Wm082790

there is no fucking .jar file. theres only text document, windows batch file, and WinRaR archive

    • Kramer

You’re an idiot. Enable showing file extensions because that’s not a RaR Archive, that’s a .jar file. WinRar can open .jar files, but you don’t want them to because they can be executed by java.

tl;dr: Install java and it will work.

  • Nikhil Sabhani

How to get code for Android PC Remote?

  • lem

yet another pc controller – here’s an idea someone make this so i can control an android hdmi dongle with my tablet instead of the crazy mouse/keyboard controller they come with

  • Pet Fotografer

Love this app, works perfectly on my HP Touchpad running CM9 ICS.

  • punto

can you use this to control anothe android?

    • Anthonny Arias

If you find an app that control another android, let me know, please.

  • rashwan

    it is really perfect

  • gilbert

please do clarify this to me,
both my android phone and my laptop are on network, the difference is that my laptop is connected to net through a LAN while my phone is connected through a different network provider.
so in this scenario can this work out, and if so what should i do?

  • klimro
