Verizon offering Double Data Deal to free up bandwidth for the iPhone 3

Earlier in the week we told you about Verizon's Double Data deal. We wondered why they would offer this since they had just started implementing tiered data plans. It seems as though the culprit is the iPhone, according to Verizon CFO Fran Shammo.

With more and more iPhone users clogging the 3G network, Verizon either needs to invest in expanding it or get non iPhone users switched to 4G LTE. They have chosen the latter since it will free up the bandwidth on 3G and they really don't want to put more money into 3G. By offering the Double Data Deal for 4G LTE customers, they are hoping it will be enough incentive to get a lot of customers to finally buy that LTE phone.

Of course it doesn't  mean those who own a 4G  phone won't ever access 3G. All areas aren't covered by LTE and many customers might turn it off to save battery life, but either way, it should free up a tremendous amount of bandwith.

My question is what happens when Apple finally releases a 4G LTE phone?

They will simply need to accelerate the migration to 5G technology for Android users while iPhones are left in the dust once more.
