The Bestseller Adaptation You Might Have Missed
Reports indicate that the original author of the source novel was involved in writing the film’s script. Similar to author Harlan Coben’s hands-on approach with Netflix thrillers, writers sometimes step in to adapt their work for the screen. Despite its promising cast—yes, Angelina Jolie—this thriller didn’t achieve widespread popularity. In France, it had a tepid reception, and in most other countries it barely registered with audiences, even though it seemed poised to be a hit. Which thriller is it?
When Only the Top Spot Counts
Today, anything short of number one often gets labeled a flop. But “Those Who Wish Me Dead,” starring Angelina Jolie, didn’t fare quite so badly. The film briefly made it into the French Netflix top 10 on February 14, holding the tenth spot for just two days before falling off the chart. Similar outcomes were seen in Italy, Kenya, Nigeria, and South Africa. According to Flixpatrol data, it failed to make the top 10 elsewhere. Popularity, it turns out, can be fleeting.
From Page to Screen
“Those Who Wish Me Dead” is adapted from a 2014 novel by Michael Koryta, an author better known in the US for his crime and thriller writing. If the title sounds familiar, that’s no surprise—the film was released in theaters in May 2021. But with the post-COVID cinema landscape, it struggled at the box office. Some in France might have caught a rerun on TF1 in the past year, too.
The story centers on Hannah Faber (Angelina Jolie), a seasoned firefighter in Montana tormented by guilt after an unsuccessful rescue mission. Even as her colleagues reassure her, she can’t let go of the blame. One day, she spots Connor Casserly, a teenage boy in distress and covered in blood. He confides in her that he and his father were attacked by two men—his father didn’t survive. With the killers determined to leave no witnesses, Hannah pledges to protect Connor. Things turn even more dangerous when the criminals set the forest ablaze in pursuit.
