As the launch of Google Drive nears, more information about the service begins to leak. This time, it's the source code of Google Docs giving away secrets. The code hints at the existence of a Google Drive SDK. This means that 3rd party apps might be able to connect to Google Drive, and that makes it infinitely more powerful.

An open SDK could allow for a developer to make a desktop syncing client à la Dropbox, for example, which is one of the main advantages Dropbox has over other cloud services like Box. Could Drive dethrone Dropbox as the cloud service of choice? Google sure has the power to do that if they play their cards right.

Another hint in the code is a message that alludes to greater integration with Gmail: “Say goodbye [to] email attachments and hello to real time collaboration. Drag anything shared with you to My Drive for easy access.

Whether Google Drive ends up being a big Docs update or a standalone service, it probably won't matter much with Google's consolidated privacy policy making all of Google's services play well together. Drive will just become the cloud storage of choice for Google services. I just wonder if all the music I've uploaded and purchased through Google Music will be stored on Drive or be a separate thing all together.
