There are apps for pretty much everything on the Android Market. Controlling your PC, automatically changing phone profiles, even streaming media off of your PC can be tackled with the right app.

But what if you’re a medical professional or student (or concerned parent) and you’d like to have a few great resources in the palm of your hand? Well Brett over at MedPageToday has compiled a list of the top 5 medical apps for Android:

1. Epocrates

Quickly and easily access reliable drug information with Epocrates Rx beta! It provides multiple clinical tools in one easy-to-use application. Join more than 950,000 healthcare professionals who rely on Epocrates’ innovative clinical products to make more confident decisions at the point of care. SD card is required.

2. Skyscape

Skyscape Medical Resources is a collection of Medical Information & Decision Support resources for Healthcare Professionals like Physicians, Nurses, PAs, NPs Medical Students, Nursing Students and more. When you install the App, it will download your FREE resources which include RxDrugs, OCM & Archimedes.

Brett had this to say about Skyscape “Many Android users will download Skyscape simply to get the Archimedes, a highly useful collection of hundreds of commonly used medical calculators.  Skyscape, however, does have other medical resources for health care professionals and students.  For Android users with OS v1.5 or lower who cannot run Epocrates, one of Skyscape’s main features, “Rx Drugs,” is a fine substitute.  Outlines in Clinical Medicine (OCM) comes with the free version, and is particularly useful for students learning a new topic in medicine (e.g. pediatric vaccination schedules).  Users, however, will find many of Skyscape’s more robust features unavailable in the free-edition.”

3. PubMed Mobile

  • Keyword search with options
  • Save search query
  • Save citations
  • Email citations

PubMed Mobile also allows you to select and read abstracts, save searches and articles, and send articles to the printer, email, or social networking websites.

4. CPR – Choking

Brett had this to say about CPR-Choking “A wonderfully simple video-based app for learning basic life support skills on the fly.  The depth of information may not be sufficient to learn every caveat of BLS – and it certainly does not touch on ACLS, but for a quick refresher or first-time learner this app is a great starting point.”

5. First Aid

Brett’s article cheated a bit and had a security app as #5, saying that security is important in the medical field. While I don’t refute that at all, I’d like to keep this a exclusively medical-related so I did a little searching and found this great app. First Aid is designed to help you follow the right procedures in a stressful situation or support other people by giving them instructions. It is based on illustrations, videos and short texts that show you how to take the necessary action step by step and in the right order.
