Sprint and T-Mobile Speak Out About Froyo Updates for Galaxy S: Coming Soon

by Michael Murphy

There was a rumor going ’round that the US-based Galaxy S phones weren’t going to see the Froyo update, and that it was a cost/political issue.   While we never really bought it here at Talkandroid, it was a popular rumor until a few days ago, when Phonescoop reported otherwise. We were pleased to hear that rumor was bogus, not only because it never really made sense, but because it would’ve been pretty underhanded of everyone involved. Well, today, both T-Mobile and Sprint have made statements regarding Froyo updates on their Galaxy S devices.

T-Mobile announced earlier today that the Vibrant will start to see the 2.2 Froyo update…tomorrow! That’s right, Vibrant owners, get ready for your Froyo goodness, because you’ll have it very soon. Some of you may see it tomorrow, but as is common, it’s rolling out in waves — it may be a week or so for some of you. But still, it’s real, and it’s coming. What was the reason for the holdup? Not cost.

“It was a quality control and timing issue…The biggest challenge is integration and customization.”

No surprise there, every US carrier had to put its own little spin on the Galaxy S line, starting with their custom apps. Sprint even went so far as to substantially modify the hardware, adding a physical slide-out keyboard, LED flash, and front-facing carmera. Nice additions, those.

So what of the updates to the other Galaxy S phones? Well, Sprint has stepped forward as well, and while they haven’t given a date, they have promised it’s coming soon.

So it looks like there may be a light at the end of the tunnel for Galaxy S owners after all. If T-Mobile and Sprint have stepped forward and are making promises, you can expect the other carriers will soon follow suit. And hopefully they’ll learn enough from this that the Gingerbread update will be quicker and easier for all.

    When is ATT updating?

Well it is nice to see that the updates are coming out. I really don’t buy the reasons though. I believe there was more to this than stated. It would not be the first time we don’t get the whole store. And what if this the truth. There are still some big issues here. Sorry, but I am a developer and I don’t think it takes 4 months or more to get an updated version of the software. If they companies put the correct focus on these updates it would have been done in a timely manner. In other words, the amount of resources required to get out a quick and stable update were placed elsewhere. Like newer phone models.

Why Verizon has not responded with some answer? I think it is pretty bad for the company to say “yes” you’ll get Froyo soon back in November when I got my phone and now I still have to wait. Mean while Sprint and other companies have it. Either Verizon needs to get on the ball or complain to samsung and get them on the ball. Either way it really is a sucky way of doing business.

I hate the criptic messages from Samsung. There is something obviously wrong with their devlopment process or they are lying to us. Why are they so many months behind? They have never answered that question.

Doesn’t mean anything really. Does that even begin to explain why they have been so many months behind HTC in getting us Froyo?

We’ve heard statements like this from Samsung before, like back in Novemeber. I’ll believe the update when I see it.

I’m an Epic owner and as it is now, my next phone will NOT be a samsung, though I love my device. The support in bringing us the latest OS versions is horrific.
