Google is making huge strides to put Android OS into the hands of businesses. With the growing popularity of Google Apps, and the rapidly growing Android device market share, it only makes sense to merge the two platforms and do some cool stuff.
For devices running Android 2.2, you can now manage these devices using Google Apps in your browser. Some of the features you can manage are;
- remote data wipe for lost or stolen devices
- Lock idle devices after inactivity
- require a password on each phone
- set minimum lengths for passwords
- require passwords to include letters and numbers
Also, the administrator can withdraw access to company info when an employee leaves the company without wiping the phone in the event that the device originally belonged to the employee. Very cool feature indeed. From experience, this is a big pain in corporate domains to manage user access and security.
All of these features can be managed on the devices that have Google Apps Device Policy installed, which will be available in the Android Market in a few days, and free for users within Google Apps Premier and Education Edition products.
